Chapter 11: The Dinner Party
"Then I'm not getting in," I said.
"You don't know that."
"Clifford. She read my chart just to throw me out of an emergency room."
"She did that alone, at midnight, with one scared man from admin." He held up the diary. "She's never had to do anything in front of people who knew the truth."
"What people?"
"Her people."
He checked his phone.
"She's hosting a dinner tomorrow night. Twenty donors at the house in Georgetown. She does it every October."
"You want to walk into your mother's dinner party."
"I want you to walk in with me."
Louise pushed the bedroom door open.
She had obviously been listening the whole time.
"We're going," she said. "I don't have a salon to open anyway."
Clifford drove us down the next afternoon in a rented car.
I slept most of the way with my head against the window and his coat over my knees.
Every time I woke up, his hand was on the gearshift an inch from mine.
Cynthia's house was tall and white, with black shutters and a brass lion on the door.
