Chapter 24: The Table at the Lake

I woke on Sunday to find Tiernan already awake and watching me.

He lay on his side in the grey light with one arm under the pillow.

He looked at me.

"You've been up for an hour," I said.

"Two."

"Why?"

"Because I'm terrified of your brothers," he said.

I laughed, and pulled him down by the neck.

The kiss was lazy and warm, a Sunday kiss, and it did not stay lazy for long.

I rolled him onto his back and took the sheet off both of us.

He was already hard against my thigh.

I slid down his body, kissing his chest and his stomach.

I followed the line of dark hair below his navel and took him into my mouth.

He groaned and put his hand gently on my head.

I worked him slow and deep, tasting salt, and felt his legs tremble.

"Lexi.

Come up here."

I climbed over him and lowered myself onto his cock inch by inch, my eyes on his, until he filled me completely.

We both held still, just feeling it.

Then I began to move.

His hands slid up my thighs to my hips and guided me, slow and rolling.

The lake light came up grey and then gold across the bed.

He sat up and held me against his chest while I rode him.

I felt every breath he took, and every word he did not say.

"I love you," he said into my throat.

It was the first time.

I had been waiting to hear it without knowing that I was.

"I love you too," I said, and came with a long shudder, clenching around him.

He followed with my name in his mouth, his arms locked around me, and we stayed that way until the sun cleared the trees.

At noon, I heard the trucks.

Five pickups came down the gravel drive in a line.

They stopped in the grass beside the dock, and the doors opened one after another.

The brothers got out.

I stood on the porch with a coffee, and watched them lift something enormous out of the lead truck's bed.

It was the Kinsella table.

The long oak one, scarred by forty years of homework and elbows and knives.

They carried it down the lawn on their shoulders like a boat.

They set it on the grass at the end of the dock, with the lake behind it.
