Chapter 6: The Roster

"What happened?" I said.

"She collapsed. At Weston. In front of everybody." Mom was breathing fast. "They took her in an ambulance, Joss. An ambulance."

"Is she okay?"

"Is she okay? Your sister is lying in a hospital bed and you're asking me if she's okay like it's a weather report."

"I'm asking if she's okay because I want to know if she's okay."

"She hasn't been eating. She hasn't been sleeping. Not since you ran off in the middle of graduation without a word."

"Mom. Is she hurt?"

"You need to be on a plane tonight. I already looked at flights. There's one at six."

"I can't be on a plane tonight. I have a test in eleven days."

"A test." She laughed, high and ugly. "Your sister is in the hospital and you have a test."

She hung up.

I stood in the trail holding the phone.

Emory came back up the hill slowly.

"Family?"

"My twin's in the hospital."

His face changed. "Go. I'll drive you to the airport right now. The captain will understand."

"I don't know yet if I should."

He frowned.

I called Gavin.

He picked up on the first ring, which meant he was holding his phone and waiting for it.

"She's fine," he said, before I could ask. "Joss, she's fine. I'm in the lobby."

"Mom said ambulance."

"It was orientation. Outdoor picnic, ninety degrees. She skipped lunch to fit into a dress."

"She fainted on the quad for a second. They gave her fluids. She's out in an hour."

"Okay."

"Joss." His voice dropped. "Don't look at her account."

So of course I looked at her account.

The video had been up for two hours.

Paisley was in a hospital bed with an IV in the back of her hand, her eyes red and huge.
