Chapter 13: The Second Page

Ivo's POV

I had already read the whole page by the time I handed her the top line.

That was the first thing I did wrong, and I knew it while I did it.

The rest of the sheet sat under my thumb, in small grey type.

I wanted her to hold the worst of it a few seconds after me.

Cassandra read the header three times.

Her lips moved on the last words, and then she looked up.

"Wearing," she said. "It says her rank is on the subject. Beatrix is the subject."

"Yes."

"Then it's her rank."

"No."

The east steps were empty except for the two of us.

Down in the yard, the flask she had thrown still lay in the red gravel.

Neither of us looked at it.

"Read the second paragraph," I said.

She read it aloud, slowly.

"Bind formed at birth, by the Alpha of origin, through the twin tie. Rank of the source suppressed in the source and carried by the subject. Maintained by a daily draught."

She stopped.

"A daily draught," I said, "of willow bark and nightroot, steeped bitter. It is a sedative for wolves. The old Alphas used it on wolves they could not afford to let wake."

Her hand was flat against the page, and she did not move it.

"My mother pours me a cup every morning," she said. "She calls it nerve tea."

"I know."

"You know."

"Your father held out the flask in the east yard. He said, Take your tea."

I had heard that sentence and filed it under things the Harrowgates did.
