Chapter 24: Last One Home
At six on Monday morning Leo sat on a hospital bed at CHOP in a gown covered in little cartoon whales.
His deck of cards was in his lap.
My mother sat in the chair by the window, holding her purse.
Nick stood by the door in his navy Medic uniform.
The city had given him his job back, with his nine years of seniority.
He'd come straight off a night shift in Atlantic City and driven over the bridge without changing.
"You look like a cop," Leo told him.
"I'm way nicer than a cop," Nick said.
The surgeon came in at a quarter past six, a tall gray-haired woman in blue scrubs.
She sat down on the end of the bed.
"I hear you do magic," she said.
Leo looked at me.
"Go on," I said.
He shuffled, and two cards jumped out of the deck onto the blanket.
He put them back and fanned the cards out toward her in both hands.
"Pick a card," he said. "Any card. Don't show me."
She picked one, looked at it and held it against her chest.
While Leo shuffled her card back in, I watched her hands.
