Britt's POV
My mother did not wait for me to come to her.
She came through the warm room door with two church ladies behind her, and the purple cardigan was one of them.
I had last seen that cardigan across a coffee urn.
"Britt Bakken," my mother said.
"Your car has been in Longfellow every night for two months. A woman from our church lives across the alley."
I stood in the middle of the warm room with Leif's hand still on the small of my back.
Gunnar came in from the ice behind me with a coil of rope on his shoulder.
Dale and Nils came in behind him and stopped at the door.
Nobody said anything.
My mother looked at each man in turn, and her mouth got smaller with every one.
She stopped at Gunnar.
"Annika's husband," she said.
It was not a greeting.
