Chapter 17: Donal's Choice
Roisin's POV
On Friday night the Hall was so full that men stood along the walls with their pints held to their chests.
Fifty chiefs and drivers sat on the benches in rows, and under the portrait of the old boss, Padraig sat on his stool in the same navy cardigan with a cup of tea.
He looked entirely at ease.
I sat at the end of the front bench in my father's flannel, with my brother on my left and Mal on my right.
Mal had not touched me all evening.
His knee was against mine under the bench, and I could feel the warmth of it through two layers of denim.
I couldn't stop thinking about the black ribbon on his wrists.
I made myself stop.
The elder with the cane stood and struck the floor three times.
"A challenge is made," he said. "The acting boss says the heir broke the Family's peace. The heir says the acting boss broke the Family's blood. The chiefs will hear both and vote. Padraig."
