Chapter 8: The Body Bag
The Hibernian Hall on Bunker Hill Street has a green door and a brass harp over it.
At eleven o'clock on Friday night I pushed a gurney through that door with a body bag strapped on top.
Sixty men stopped talking.
It happened in a wave, from the door to the bar.
The only sound left was the jukebox playing an old Dubliners song nobody was listening to.
The room was long and low and smelled of beer and floor wax.
Old photographs of men in hats hung along the walls.
At the far end, over the bar, hung a portrait of a heavy, white-haired man in a black suit.
He looked like he could bite through a bar stool.
Mal's father.
Padraig sat directly under it on a stool, in a navy cardigan, with a cup of tea at his elbow.
He looked like somebody's favorite uncle.
"Roisin," he said warmly. "You came."
"Where's my brother?"
"Safe, sweetheart. He's in the car outside, with a blanket and a hot drink."
"I want to see him."
