Chapter 8: Nobody But Me

The bolt went into Kit's left shoulder and pinned him to the floor.

He had been asleep a second before.

Now there was a burning line of silver through muscle and bone.

There was a roar in his ears, and a body landing on top of him.

"Don't move," Ewan said.

"It's in me, you idiot, I know it's in me."

"Don't move."

Ewan's hands closed around the shaft where it stuck out of the rug.

Kit smelled his skin begin to burn.

"Ewan, it's silver, you'll," he started, and the king pulled.

It came out with a wet tearing sound.

Kit screamed through his teeth.

Ewan threw the bolt across the room, and it rang off the stone of the hearth.

His palms were raw and smoking, and he did not seem to feel them.

"Garth!" he shouted, and the whole floor shook with it.

Boots pounded in the hall.

Garth hit the door with one shoulder, saw them, and went straight out the way he'd come, shouting for the guards.

Then they were alone.

Kit lay on his back on the rug with blood running hot down his chest and his shoulder on fire.

Ewan was over him on hands and knees, shaking, with his eyes all gold.
