I woke on his cot at nine, which was a scandal.

Sun poured through the window onto the quilt, and the cove outside was blue and flat and bright.

The room smelled of last night's woodsmoke.

Ansel lay beside me on his stomach with one arm flung over my waist, deeply asleep.

I had never seen him sleep past six.

I propped myself on an elbow and looked at him.

There was a crease from the pillow on his cheek.

His hair stood straight up, and the lines of his face had gone soft.

He looked about twenty-five.

I reached over and poked him in the ribs.

"Mm."

"It's nine," I said.

"It's Sunday," he said.

"You have never in your life slept till nine."

"I signed away a company last night," he said into the pillow. "I'm entitled."

"You are not entitled."

"I'm unemployed. I'm entitled to everything."

I laughed so hard I had to put my face against his shoulder.

He rolled over, caught me around the waist, and dragged me on top of him, and I shrieked.

"Say that again," he said, with his eyes still shut.

"Say what?"

"You laughed. I like it. The gap shows," he said.
