Chapter 38: The Headland
My father is buried on the headland above Port Gannet, under a plain gray stone, facing the harbor.
We went up on the last Sunday in April, when the mud had dried and the first lupines were showing.
I carried the ring of brass keys in my pocket.
Ansel carried a thermos and a folding stool, which he insisted on, because the ground was damp.
"I can sit in the grass," I said.
"You can sit on the stool."
"You brought a stool to a cemetery."
"I bring a stool to everything," he said. "I'm thirty-eight."
I laughed, and the sound went out over the wind.
He had turned thirty-eight in February, and I had given him a tide clock, and he had looked at it for a full minute.
The stone said ARMAND JOSEPH OUELLETTE, and two dates.
Under them ran a line Fern had chosen in French that I never translated out loud.
I knelt and brushed the old leaves off the base.
"Hi, Papa," I said.
The wind moved through the long grass.
