Chapter 16: Friday Morning
At seven the ambulance backed up to the Birchwood doors with its lights off.
I was standing in the lobby in yesterday's clothes with a cold coffee in my hand.
Eli stood on my left.
Willa stood on my right.
Behind us, in a half circle, the night nurse had pulled two wheelchairs and a walker into the hall and left them there, and three other residents sat in them in their bathrobes, watching the doors.
Nobody had told them to.
The night nurse leaned on the desk with her arms folded.
"I'll chart it," she said quietly. "Martin slept eight hours. No outbursts. I'll sign it."
"Thank you," I said.
"Don't thank me. I've had a long night."
The doors opened.
Two paramedics came in pushing a gurney, and behind them came a young man in a gray suit with a leather folder, and behind him, in a camel overcoat with the collar turned up, came Gordon.
He saw me and smiled with real regret.
"Hannah. I hoped you'd be asleep."
"I haven't been," I said.
"I'm sorry for that." He turned to the lawyer. "Show her."
The lawyer opened the folder and held out a page.
"This is a directive from the foundation," he said. "Under the facility's behavioral review policy, Mr. Doyle is to be transferred to the county care unit for assessment. We have physician sign-off."
"Whose?"
"A physician."
"What's his name?"
The lawyer looked at Gordon.
"It's not necessary for you to know that," he said.
The director had come out of her office.
She was in her coat, and she was holding a thick binder to her chest.
