Chapter 10: My Father's Hat
My father had grown smaller since the wedding.
He stood on Marwan Karam's porch in the lamplight with his hat in both hands and a cardboard box at his feet.
He was sixty, a retired grocer with a good coat and a cough.
He would not look past my shoulder at the man behind me.
"Nahla," he said in Chaldean.
"Baba," I said.
"Come home."
The housekeeper had opened the door.
Marwan said nothing at all, and I felt him stop on the step behind me.
"It's cold," I said. "Come in."
My father stepped over the threshold slowly, with his eyes on his shoes.
He stood in the front hall with the hat against his chest.
He looked at the icon of the Virgin and then at the carpet.
"Yousif sent me," he said. "He sat in my kitchen on Sunday. He said it was a favor."
"I'm sure he did," I said.
"Fadi is dying, Nahla."
"I know."
"The whole church is talking." His hands tightened on the hat. "Warda has not been to Mass since the day."
