Chapter 14: Two Tickets

Marwan's POV

I woke on my father's couch with the coat on the floor and the place beside me cold.

I knew where she was before I stood up.

I had asked the housekeeper to pack the bags at four, and to leave them where Nahla would see them.

I had thought it through for three days, and I had decided that was the kindest way to do it.

She stood in the front hall in my shirt with the itinerary in her hand.

She was reading it a second time.

"Beirut," she said.

"My aunt's house is in Jounieh," I said. "It has a wall and a priest next door."

"Tonight."

"The flight is at eleven-forty."

"You took my passport out of my bag," she said.

"Yes."

She turned her head and looked at me.

It was the look she had given her father over the box.

"Where is Yara?" she said.

"Asleep."

"Good. Come with me."

She picked up the pink suitcase in one hand and walked past me through the kitchen.

I followed, because I had no idea what else to do.

The laundry room was a narrow room off the back of the kitchen, with a washer, a dryer and a folding shelf.

The housekeeper had put a load of Yara's sheets in at dawn.

The dryer was running, and it shuddered a little on its feet.

Nahla shoved the door shut behind me and threw the suitcase on the shelf.

"Say it," she said.

"My uncle said that if he dies, it is blood," I said. "Yousif said it in front of six hundred people."

"And?" she said.

"He will send his sons. He said he would come for both of you."

"So you booked a plane," she said.

"I booked the one place on earth where they cannot reach you."

"Without telling me," she said.

"I was going to tell you."

"When? At the airport?"

I said nothing.

I had been going to tell her at the airport, so that she could not say no in the house.
