Chapter 9: The Rouge Lot

He drove with one hand on the wheel and the other between my thighs.

He did not say a word until we passed the Rouge River bridge.

The snow came down in the headlights.

His fingers moved slowly under the green dress, through the thin cotton, and then not through it.

I put my head back against the seat and let my knees fall open.

"Nahla," he said.

"Don't talk," I said. "Drive."

"I'm driving."

"Then do it better."

He laughed, low, and slid two fingers inside me, and I gripped the door handle.

At the light on Miller Road he found my clit with his thumb and stayed there.

A truck pulled alongside us.

I saw the driver glance down into our window.

I did not close my knees.

"Green," I said, when the light changed, in a voice that cracked.

"I know."

He drove on, and his thumb kept up its slow circles.

He turned off into a lot behind the plant, where the chain hung loose from its post.

The great stacks of the Rouge stood up against the snow-lit sky, dark except for the red lights at their tops.

There was no one for a quarter mile.

He parked facing the river and killed the lights.

Then he used his other hand too.

"Look at the stacks," he said in Arabic, in my ear. "Keep your eyes open."

"Why?"

"I want to hear you come with the whole factory watching."
