Chapter 11: The Drawer

Gabe's POV

My father kept his office on the second floor of the mill, with a window over the drying bins and a framed photograph of every Guidry who had run the place.

He didn't get up when I came in on Friday morning.

"You look like you haven't slept."

"She's mine," I said.

"So you told me on the phone."

"The lab says so. Ninety-nine point nine nine."

"Sit down, son," my father said.

"I'll stand."

He folded his hands on the blotter.

He didn't look surprised, and I noticed it and set it aside, because I was too tired to follow it anywhere.

"Then it's very good news," my father said. "It's a blessing. A girl, but a Guidry. I'm only sorry it's come through that woman."

"That woman is her mother."

"A woman who left a child of yours to be raised by strangers."

"She raised her herself," I said.

"For five years, in another state, without a word to you."

"I said whose is it, Daddy. I said it in front of the whole yard."

"You said what any man would say," my father said.

"I said it to my wife with a mic in the room." My voice was louder than I had meant it to be. "She had gone to the doctor by herself that morning. I found out from the parking receipt."

I hadn't known I knew that.

I had found the Lafayette receipt in her coat pocket the night she left.

I had put it in the kitchen drawer with the cup and not looked at it again.

My father's eyes went narrow.

"I've thought about it," he said. "What's best for the child. She ought to be here, in a proper house, with a proper name. Delphine can take a larger part."

"Delphine."

"She's a fine woman. She's run the books six years. She's been at our table every Sunday since you were alone."
