Chapter 22: Ice Cream

We were in the truck before the school secretary finished talking.

Gabe drove with one hand and held the phone to his ear with the other.

"Where did he say he was taking her?" he asked her.

"For ice cream, sir," the secretary said. "He said the mill."

"Thank you."

He dropped the phone in the cup holder, and his knuckles on the wheel went white.

"He wouldn't hurt her," I said.

"No."

"He's her grandfather."

"I know what he is," Gabe said.

"Gabe, drive faster."

"I'm doing eighty."

"Do ninety," I said.

He did ninety.

We took the Crowley turnoff fast and went through the east gate, where the foreman was standing with a clipboard.

Gabe didn't stop to speak to him.

He parked across two spaces and was out of the truck before it quit rocking.

I ran behind him up the iron stairs and down the long hall past the payroll office, where I had once worked for six years.

The break room was at the end.

I heard the laughter before I reached the door.
