He came on the Tuesday after Harvest Day, in the black truck, alone.
I was shelling pecans on the porch swing with a bowl in my lap, and Mémère was inside napping with the radio on.
Lou was at school, and this time I had changed the pickup list myself.
Armand stopped at the bottom of the steps and didn't climb them.
He wore the same coat.
It hung on him now.
"Odette."
"Mr. Guidry."
"The women at the church sent me a letter. All eight of them. They signed it." He turned his hat in his hands. "I don't know what to do with a letter like that."
"You could read it."
"I did."
"What did it say?" I asked.
"That I wasn't welcome at the Altar Society supper." He gave a short bark of a laugh. "I've been welcome at that supper for forty years."
I cracked a pecan and set the meat in the bowl.
He looked at the boards.
