Chapter 8: Every Birthday

Ettore went down to the street in his shirtsleeves and left the door unlocked behind him.

I watched from the window as he crossed to the black car.

The driver rolled down his window, and they talked for less than a minute.

Ettore came back up the steel stairs slowly.

"He says Cesare wants to see you. At the apartment, today, alone."

"What did you say?"

"I told him Miss Orsini keeps her own appointments." He shut the door. "He didn't like it. He's gone to tell Cesare."

I laughed, and then I stopped, because I had started to shake.

He crossed the kitchen and stood in front of me, close, his hands at his sides again.

"Gianna. Last night."

"Don't," I said. "Don't tell me it was a mistake."

"I was going to say I'd do it again."

"Oh."

"Tonight, tomorrow, every day if you let me."

I looked at the floor.

"You don't have to say that. You're my father's man. You'd say anything he told you to."

"Your father never told me to touch you."

"Then why is this the only place anyone's been kind to me? Nobody remembers me, Ettore. Three birthdays, three years. Two hundred people in a ballroom and none of them knew my name was on the card."

"That's not true."

"It's true. I'm the one nobody thinks about."

"Gianna." His voice was very quiet. "You're the one I think about."

I looked up.

He went to the little table by the bed and opened the drawer, and took out a canvas notebook, soft with age.
