Chapter 12: Her Heart
I went to the annex at noon on Sunday, because that was the day Magda had asked me.
The watchman had phoned me himself, at the row house, at seven.
He said Magda wanted me there, and that he was done with his orders.
She was waiting at the steel door in a long camel coat and a knit hat, with her bag on her shoulder.
The night watchman stood beside her holding a ring of keys.
"I asked him to wait for you," said Magda.
"Why?" I said.
"Because it's yours to see." She took a breath. "And because I can't stand it anymore. I have been a secret for eleven years and I am so tired."
The watchman looked at me.
He was a heavy old man with a grey mustache.
"The mother has the only other key," he said. "She told me never to open it. I have been here forty years. I am opening it."
We climbed the narrow stair.
Magda went slowly, one hand on the rail, pausing at each landing.
