Chapter 21: Red Carpet

Savannah's lawyer had her out of the garage in twenty minutes.

I watched the silver dress go up the ramp between her father and a man in a dark coat, her head high and her eyes on nothing.

She told the detective she'd come to look for a friend.

She told him the man with the knife was a disturbed fan who had lied.

By midnight, the hooded man was in a cell, giving a statement in a shaking voice, and his phone had four months of messages from an account that said S.

It still wasn't enough to keep her from the stage.

I had known it wouldn't be.

Quitting would have meant admitting.

On Saturday evening the Rialto's marquee blazed with the Lakeview logo, and the red carpet ran down Main Street to the curb.

Cameras lined both sides.

A banner over the doors said LAKEVIEW: HOMETOWN PREMIERE, and under it, in smaller letters, A Night With Savannah Kettering.

Wyatt held my hand all the way down the carpet.

He wore a dark jacket with the sleeves a little short, and I wore my mother's blue dress.

Dale walked behind us in a borrowed suit.

My mother walked beside Laney, who had a black clutch and a fierce look.

The line of fans along the barricade turned to watch us pass.

A girl hissed, "That's her."

Another one held up a sign that said TEAM SAVANNAH.

I kept my eyes forward.

Savannah stood at the head of the carpet in white, with her hair curled and her makeup perfect.

A host held a microphone, and the livestream camera was a red eye over his shoulder.

"You've been through so much this week," the host said.

"I have." Savannah's voice shook beautifully. "Last night someone who was obsessed with me tried to hurt a person I love. I'm still shaking. But I'm here for my fans, because they never gave up on me."
