Chapter 22: Nothing Left to Say

Wyatt's POV

The theater emptied in silence.

Nobody ran.

People just got up, holding their phones low, and filed out.

I stayed in my seat with Ruby's hand in mine until the house lights came up.

Then the detective walked down the center aisle with two officers, and Savannah's father stood up and said, "I want my lawyer present."

"He's in the lobby, sir," the detective said. "He's been there since the garage."

They took her out the side door, not the front.

She walked between the officers with her white dress dragging, and she didn't look at her mother, or at Ruby.

She looked at me.

I watched it happen without wanting to.

I thought I'd feel satisfied.

All I felt was the cold of the theater and the weight of Ruby's palm.

"I'll be outside," I told her.

"I'll come with you."

"Give me two minutes."

She nodded, and I knew she understood.

The side door opened onto an alley behind the Rialto.

A black SUV idled there, and the officers had stopped beside it, waiting on a form.

Savannah stood in the wet light with her arms at her sides.

Her mascara was running, and she wasn't trying to fix it.

"Wyatt," she said.

I stopped ten feet away.

"Please." She took a step. "Please tell them it was a misunderstanding. They'll listen to you. You're the one who saved me, you're the one who was grieving, you know what it is to lose someone and want to hold on."

"You wrote to a dead girl's brother to get to him."

"I meant it about Daisy." Her voice broke. "I signed her poster. I wrote it because I meant it."

"What did you mean?"
