Chapter 19: The Dryer
Nathan had my underwear in his breast pocket, and every time he passed me in the chair's crowded living room he touched the pocket.
It was a Friday in the middle of February.
The whole department stood in the chair's big Victorian house on Washtenaw with wine in their hands.
Sixty people talked about funding.
I wore a green wool dress with long sleeves and a high neck, and under it I wore nothing at all.
"It was a courtesy," Nathan had said in the car, with a perfectly straight face. "The dress shows lines."
I had let him take them.
Marcello stood across the room with Claudia's arm through his, talking to a visiting historian from Toronto.
Claudia caught my eye over her wine and raised her glass one inch.
She knew.
She had known in January, too, when she came through the oak door with a thermos of tea.
She had sat in Marcello's desk chair with her glasses on and watched Colin have his turn.
She always knew.
Colin came up beside me with a plate of cheese cubes he had no intention of eating.
"Oh, yeah," he said, very low. "No. I counted the doors."
"How many?"
"Eleven," he said. "One of them is a laundry room."
"Where?"
"Behind the kitchen," Nathan said, appearing at my other shoulder without any hurry. "It has a lock. I looked."
We crossed the living room one at a time.
I walked through the kitchen with my heart going hard, between two caterers and a sheet pan of tiny quiches.
The laundry room was at the end of a back hall.
