Chapter 17: The Dance Tower
The Hongwanji courtyard was full by seven.
Paper lanterns hung in strings from the temple roof to the top of the dance tower, red and white and gold.
The tower stood in the middle of the yard, a square of raw lumber with two taiko drums on top.
The drummers beat out the old rhythm, and a hundred dancers went around it in a ring.
They wore cotton yukata and white tabi and they moved their hands all together, slowly, in the old steps.
The Higas stood on the left side of the yard.
The Rapozas stood on the right.
Nobody had put a rope between them, and nobody needed to.
Seiji sat in a folding chair in the front row of the left side, in a fresh aloha shirt.
His wife sat beside him.
Frank sat in the front row of the right, with a paper plate of andagi on his knee.
His wife sat on his far side and did not eat.
I wore my grandmother's indigo yukata with the white cranes, and my hair was up in the low knot.
Dean stood at my left shoulder in a black jinbei.
Manny stood at my right in his best aloha shirt, the blue one, with his hat in his hand.
His fingers were laced through mine.
Dean's palm was flat against the small of my back, warm through the cotton.
Both of them had touched me like this in the dark of a ballroom, and I had led them out of it.
