Chapter 6: Cucumber Soup

Constance sent a car on Sunday, and I took it.

I wanted my passport.

I also wanted to see every one of their faces at once.

The Aldane house in Greenwich had eleven chimneys and a dining room with a table for sixteen.

Tonight it was set for five.

Preston sat at his mother's right hand.

An empty chair waited for me at the foot, with a folded card in calligraphy that said Joanna.

Next to it, at the window, was a second card.

Lacey.

My sister looked up from her wine, and her whole face crumpled with relief.

"Jo. I told them you'd come. Preston asked me to be here, I hope that's okay. Somebody had to keep the peace."

"Lacey, my dear," Constance said warmly, "sit by the window. You know I like you there."

I noticed it.

Then I sat down, because the soup arrived.

It was a cold cucumber soup, in white bowls with gold rims.

"Joanna," Constance said. "I think we can all agree the last few days have been regrettable."

"Which part?"

"Every part. Particularly the part where you embarrassed my son in front of two hundred donors."

"Constance," Preston said, "she's had a shock."

"Hush." She slid a long cream envelope down the table with one finger.

It stopped against my soup bowl.

"Open it."

I opened it.

My passport was inside.

Under the passport was a cashier's check made out to Joanna Aldane for two million dollars.

Stapled to it was a six-page agreement with the word CONFIDENTIAL across the top.

"Two million," Constance said. "Plus the apartment in Astoria, which I'm told you're attached to. You will sign this tonight, you will not speak to the press, and you will go quietly. I'll even write you a kind letter of reference for the theatre."
