Chapter 21: The Lot

Bram's POV

At ten to five, two unmarked cars and a van with state plates came off Route 9 and parked across the front of the Lakeshore Room with their lights off.

I was out of the truck before the doors opened.

A woman in a gray windbreaker came around the nearest car, holding up a badge.

"Sir, stay back."

"My girlfriend is inside."

It was the first time I'd said the word out loud.

"Hazel Entwistle?" the woman asked.

"Yes."

"Her lawyer called it in at two. We've had this warrant on the judge's desk since yesterday afternoon." She nodded at the door. "She's not in danger from us. Stay at the fence."

I stayed at the fence.

It was the hardest thing I'd done since the night I sat in the car as a boy.

Eight officers went in through the front and four through the side.

For a minute nothing happened.

Then people began coming out.

They came out in ones and twos, blinking at the dawn, some with their coats over their heads, men I'd seen at my kitchen door twenty years ago, asking for my father.

Nobody had cuffs on them.

The cuffs were for the others.

The floor boss came out first, with his hands behind his back and his face blank.
