Chapter 14: The Lab
Ingrid's lab was on the third floor of a brick building in Cambridge, and the elevator still smelled like cold coffee.
She unlocked the door with a key on a lanyard and held it open with her cane.
Eight long tables stood in the dark room, and every one of them had a single chair.
"My students are in the library on Saturdays," she said. "They think I do not know."
At the far end was one desk with a sheet draped over the whiteboard behind it.
"I have not let anyone sit there," Ingrid said.
She pulled the sheet away.
The board was covered in equations, faded gray, in a handwriting I had not seen in eleven years.
It was mine, at sixteen, small and slanted and in a hurry.
I set the shoebox on the desk, and my hands were steady.
"I will tell you what I did in the order I did it," Ingrid said. "Sit."
I stayed standing, and she nodded.
