Chapter 19: Second Night

The door was unlocked, as promised.

His apartment was on the second floor of a green triple-decker in Somerville, two rooms and a kitchen the size of a closet.

It was clean in a way that looked frightened.

Dash stood in the middle of the living room in a gray T-shirt and bare feet, with his hands hanging.

"I cleaned," he said. "I don't know why I'm telling you."

"Open any drawer."

"That's what I said."

I went into the kitchen and pulled open the first drawer.

It held three forks, a bottle opener and a folded square of yellow paper.

I knew it before I touched it.

Tie-break by oldest request first, and at the bottom, in my own small slanting hand, two letters.

"I should have given it to you days ago," he said from the doorway. "It's yours."

"Why did you keep it?"

"Because it was the first thing you ever signed for me."

I held it up between two fingers.

"Keep it," I said. "File it under evidence."

I put it back in the drawer and shut it.

Then I took off my glasses, folded them, and set them on the counter myself.
