Chapter 14: The Folder

Harvey's POV

I opened the folder at midnight, in my grandfather's study, with the lamp on.

It had been under my arm for four days.

I had carried it past a judge, a hospital and a boardroom without breaking the seal.

The seal was a strip of tape, because my grandfather never trusted wax.

Inside were forty pages of will, a photograph and an envelope with my name on it.

The handwriting was the one I had copied onto birthday cards since I was seven.

The photograph showed my grandmother in a garden, laughing at whoever held the camera.

I laid it face up on the desk, and then I read the letter.

Harv,

If you are reading this, you found a wife, or the lawyer is being generous about the date.

I did not leave the company to you. I know that will sting.

Your cousin has wanted it since he was nine.

You have never once asked me for it.

A man who has to be asked for nothing is the only kind I trust with it.

So I gave it to the one person who will not want it for the wrong reasons.

Do not marry someone who needs you.

She will be grateful, and gratitude wears out.

Marry someone who could do without you and chooses not to.

I was wrong about many things. I was not wrong about your grandmother.

Do not go back to Rotterdam. Stay home.

I read it twice.

Then I sat with my hand flat on the page and thought about eighty-six thousand four hundred dollars.

She had needed me.

A woman with a dying mother and a surgeon's deadline had needed a man with a black card.

I had picked her out of a wedding because she was desperate, and I had called it luck.
