Chapter 20: The Dealership

Tilda's POV

"Try it," I said.

Cory's father did not answer.

"Go on," I said. "Make your call. Harvey, would you put the surgeon on speaker?"

Harvey already had his phone out.

It rang twice, and the surgeon picked up in a hallway full of echoes.

"Mr. Lorne."

"Is Mrs. Fenn able to go home?"

"Tomorrow, if she has a nurse. I was going to tell you this afternoon."

"We'll have one at the door by nine," Harvey said, and he hung up.

Cory's father's finger was still on his desk, over the button.

"That's your pavilion," I said. "She'll be eating her lunch on Alder Street, in her own kitchen, in a house with new locks."

I picked up the torn pieces of the terms sheet from his blotter.

"I'll keep these," I said. "They're the only signed paper I've ever liked."

We walked out together, and nobody stopped us.

On Wednesday afternoon, my mother was in her own bed with a nurse and a cup of tea, and I drove to Fenn Motors with a court order in my bag.

Harvey sat beside me, and he did not say a word until I parked.

"You don't have to come in," I said.

"I know."

"I'd like you to."

"Then I'm coming in."

The lot was full of balloons, and there were fifteen cars in the showroom with a banner that said CLEARANCE.

There were also fifteen people, wandering the floor with the stunned look of customers who had come to see what the video had done to the place.

Russell stood in the middle of it, in a fresh shirt, with a pen behind his ear.

He saw me, and he smiled.

It was a bad smile, with all his teeth in it.

"Well, well," he said. "The heiress."

I handed him the order.

"The bank account," I said. "The court says you unfreeze it today, and the house is my mother's. Your things are in storage, and the invoice is yours."
