Chapter 22: The Last Page

Cory pulled against Harvey's grip once, and Harvey did not let go.

"Don't touch her," Harvey said.

His voice was very quiet, and it was the quietest I had ever heard anyone say anything in that room.

Cory's fist opened, and his whole arm went slack.

The two guards at the door came across the carpet, and Harvey released him into their hands.

Cory did not fight them.

He stood between them with his hair in his eyes, looking at his father, and his father did not look back.

"Take him to the lobby," the lawyer said. "He may wait for the police there."

"Til," Cory said.

I did not answer.

"I loved you," he said. "A little."

"That's what makes it worse," I said.

They took him out.

The door shut, and the room was full of people who did not know where to put their hands.

"Counsel," I said.

"Mrs. Lorne."

"You told me last week there was a last page."

"I did."

"I'm asking for it."

He took a single sheet from the envelope, and he put on his glasses, and he did not hurry.

"Page five of the will," he said. "It was added by Mr. Lorne in the last month of his life."

He read it aloud.

"Any heir who plots against this company, or against its chief executive, by deceit, shall forfeit every share he holds to my estate. Any officer or director who aided him shall resign his seat at once. I know my family, and I know what it will do for a chair."

The mustache director laughed once, without humor.

"He knew," said the woman next to him. "That old man knew exactly what they'd do."
