Chapter 24: The Punty
I read the paragraph twice.
Then I walked across the shop and held it up for Matt, who read it with his gloves on.
Carrie read it next, out loud, at the office door.
"A violent laborer," she said. "He's a violent laborer the way I'm a ballerina."
The oldest of the crew took the page from her.
"I was on that step," he said. "So were four others. That boy didn't move a finger."
"I know," I said.
"Does the judge know?"
I looked up at the corner over the loading door.
At the little camera with its red light.
"Carrie," I said. "Where does that camera save to?"
She stared at me.
Then she ran for the office.
It took her two nights.
The recorder was a dusty gray box under the desk, behind the fax machine.
It kept five months and then wrote over the oldest day.
March thirteenth had less than four weeks left when she found it.
She copied it onto a thumb drive and wore it around her neck on a shoelace until the hearing.
The hearing was the last Thursday in July, in the family court downtown.
