Chapter 12: Bex's Couch

I put my napkin on the table.

"Thank you for lunch," I told the crew.

Then I stood up and walked out of the tea room between the tables, past the tree and the glass birds, and every face turned to watch me go.

I heard his chair scrape behind me.

I didn't wait for the elevator. I took the back stairs, five floors, and he took them behind me without a word.

On the twelfth floor I went into the old man's library and turned around.

"August," I said.

"August twelfth."

"You know the date."

"My head of security put the envelope on my desk at four in the afternoon." He stood in the doorway, his coat still on. "Hotels. Her building. His car."

"And you went to him."

"I told him to end it or tell you. I gave him a month."

"And when the month was up?"

He didn't answer.

"You sat across from me at Sunday dinner," I said. "Four times. I talked about centerpieces, Felix. I asked your opinion on peonies."

"I know."

"You said 'they're fine.'"

"I know what I said."

"Term four." I held up four fingers again, and my hand shook. "You said it was easy."

"I haven't lied to you."

"You knew on the night you knocked on my door. You sat at my table and let me say term four, and you agreed, and you already knew."

His jaw moved.

"Why?" I said. "You told Laurence. You didn't tell me. Why?"

"If I'd told you," he said, "you'd think I wanted you."
