Chapter 25: Six Hundred Guests
The two men nodded politely and walked back out into the wind.
Felix didn't open the envelope in the doorway.
He took my elbow and walked me behind the perfume counter, out of the light, while the string quartet started up under the reindeer.
He tore it open.
There were two documents inside.
The first was a lawsuit, filed that afternoon by the developer's company.
It said my marriage was a sham, entered into to defeat a valid contract of sale. It asked a judge to void it.
If a judge voided it, clause eleven sent the land to Laurence.
And Laurence had already sold it.
The second document was the contract.
The pre-sale. A hundred and forty million dollars. Closing January second.
Laurence Bancroft's signature was on every page.
"He told the board there wasn't a contract," I said.
"He told the board to show him one." Felix turned a page. "Now he's going to show them one himself."
"Why would he want them to see it?"
"Because tonight he isn't going to hide it." He folded the papers back into the envelope. "He's going to sell it to them."
