Chapter 30: The Cabin
I chose a diner under the L on Damen, two blocks from my old apartment.
I chose two in the afternoon, on a Tuesday, in daylight.
Felix's one term was about nights.
"No silences," I told him that morning. "I'm meeting Laurence at two."
He put down his coffee.
"Do you want me there?"
"No."
"Do you want me outside?"
"No."
He nodded slowly.
"Then I'll be at my desk," he said. "Not reading anything."
Laurence was already in a booth by the window when I got there.
He stood up when I came in.
He'd lost weight. His wavy hair was cut short and cheap. He wore a gray sweater with a hole in the cuff, and his wrist was bare.
The gold watch was gone for good this time.
"Thank you for coming," he said.
I sat down across from him.
The waitress brought two coffees without asking. The L went over and the sugar shaker rattled.
He didn't smile. That was the first time I could remember him not trying.
"I'm not going to explain anything," he said. "I've explained things my whole life. I'm just going to say what I did."
I waited.
He put both hands flat on the table.
"You called me from Wabash with a man behind you, and I told you to get a cab and hung up, because a girl was about to blow out candles."
His voice didn't shake. It was very quiet.
"I sold the building you worked in before I married you. I gave Evangeline my keycard, and your reindeer got smashed."
"I called you a thief in front of three hundred people."
The waitress came to top up our coffees, looked at his face and went away again.
"I bought your father's house on Christmas Day so I could stand on his porch at six in the morning."
"I told you to divorce a man who'd never lied to you, for money I'd already spent."
He stopped.
"That's it. I'm not asking you for anything. I'm sorry."
I sat with it for a long time.
The L went over again.
"Thank you for saying it," I said.
He nodded.
"I don't forgive you," I said.
