Chapter 23: His Name
Cassien did not take his sword from Severen's throat.
"I'm his husband," he said. "He married me in front of three hundred people. I'm told it's in the register."
Across the gravel, Isandor's mouth moved.
"Teeth clenched," he said.
Somebody on the south bank laughed out loud, then a lot of somebodies, and the sound came across the water.
Severen stopped smiling.
The White Citadel's square was white again, nine days later.
The Bell Tower still stood black at the north end of it, roofless, its top windows empty as eye sockets.
The whole of Lisvaine seemed to have come.
They filled the square and the streets off it, and hung out of every window, river people and citadel people and old women with baskets.
The Valdrecht court stood on the east steps in black and gold.
The Ostrel lords stood on the west steps in blue, with the Princess in front.
The forty stood in a line below the tower, in Lisvaine blue for the first time in five months.
And on the tower steps, in chains, without a circlet, stood Severen.
He was still the handsomest man in the square.
He lifted his chained hands to the crowd, and smiled, and opened his mouth.
