Chapter 8: The Hollow Oak
The horns sounded at dawn, and Isandor swung up into the saddle Cassien had cut.
Cassien rode a grey mare beside him and watched the Emperor's weight go into the stirrup.
The girth held.
Cassien's hands closed hard on his reins.
The court poured out of the palace gates behind them in a long bright line of furs and feathers and baying dogs.
Corvain rode near the back with his steward and a dozen men in plain brown cloaks.
He waved at Cassien.
His nose was still purple.
The forest swallowed them within the hour.
Isandor rode beside Cassien the whole way and talked about nothing.
He talked about the birds, and his aunt's terrible hounds, and the time he fell into a river chasing a stag at sixteen.
"You're very cheerful," Cassien said.
"I'm on a horse, out of that palace, with my husband. Why wouldn't I be cheerful?"
"Stop calling me that."
"It's what you are. It's in the register. You signed it with your teeth clenched."
Cassien looked at Isandor's saddle.
He did not mean to, but Isandor saw him do it.
