Chapter 14: Whose Hand

Sandro kissed my forehead in the kitchen, and I let him.

The photograph was inside my cardigan, flat against my ribs, where the tape had been.

At six I texted Molly: Migraine. Tonight's off. Rain check?

She sent back three sad faces and a heart, and I put the phone face down.

I ate nothing at dinner.

At eleven Sandro said he had ledgers to go through before the Sunday sit-down, and went down to the study.

I gave him twenty minutes.

Then I took the real drive out of my bag, put the photograph on top of it, and walked down the stairs in my bare feet.

The keypad lit green under my fingers.

He sat at the desk in his shirtsleeves with a green ledger open and a glass of whiskey at his elbow, poured by his own hand.

He looked up.

"Mara."

I crossed the room and laid the photograph on the blotter, face up, next to his right hand.

He didn't look at the picture.

He looked at the drive in my other hand.

"Whose is it?" I said.

"You know whose."

"Say it."

"Mine."

He said it quietly, and he turned his hand over and let me see the ring.

I had thought I would scream.

Instead my whole body went cold and still, and I heard myself ask, "You knew what I carried."

"Since the first week."

"The drive in your safe. You knew I took it."

"I watched you take it, on the study camera." He tilted his chin at the corner of the ceiling, where I had never looked. "I wanted to see what you'd do with it."

"And Molly?"

"I paid her to find out who you were, two years ago. She told me you left a man in Revere and never said his name." He said it without softening a word. "I read your phone while you slept, three times. I'm not asking you to forgive that."
