"Nobody moves," Rourke said again.

The gun was cold against my temple.

Marcus's weapon had not wavered.

The four officers froze with their hands on their holsters.

"Mr. Rourke," I said.

"Don't talk."

"I'm going to talk. You're breathing too fast."

"I said..."

"In for four. Your hand's shaking. It's the caffeine and the adrenaline, and it's going to make you do something you can't take back."

The muzzle trembled against my skin.

I kept my eyes on the wall.

"Look at the candle," I said. "Not at them. At the flame."

"Ms. Sinclair."

"Mrs. Kastar. Look at it."

His eyes flicked.

I heard the breath catch in his chest.

"Out for six. Slowly."

"You think you can manage me?"

"I think you're sixty percent of the way to a mistake. I want you at zero."

"Drop your weapon, Mr. Hale, or I will."

"Don't," I said to Marcus, calmly. "He isn't going to."

I said it to Rourke too.

"Your pulse is in your throat. I can see it. Lower the gun to the table. Palm flat. One slow motion."
