"What is this?" I said.
I held the phone out.
Damien looked at the screen.
I was still in his lap, and he was still inside me.
I felt the exact moment he understood.
His whole body went careful.
"Ava."
"Pending transfer. Recipient, D. Kastar."
"It isn't what it looks like."
"Then say what it is."
I climbed off him.
My legs weren't steady.
I pulled his shirt off the floor and put it on, and I buttoned it to the throat.
He stood and fixed his trousers.
He didn't hide behind them.
"Two days ago I moved your account into a trust," he said. "In Lily's name. Tuition, housing, books. Four years, fully funded."
"My account."
"The money's all there. Every dollar of the forty-one. I added to it."
"You added to it."
"Enough that she'll never need your shifts."
"I told you no."
"You told me no to a phone call in a hallway."
