Chapter 18: Green Dress

On Friday morning a garment bag hung on the porch hook with a note pinned to it.

"For tomorrow. Callie would have wanted you to have it. L."

Jude unzipped it in the hall.

Inside was an emerald silk dress with a boat neck, the exact green from the photograph on the sideboard.

It was Callie's, and it would have fit me.

That was the point.

Jude stood looking at it with a muscle jumping in his jaw.

"She wants you standing up there in her dress," he said.

"She wants two hundred people looking at the wrong woman."

"I know what she wants," I said.

"Say the word and I'll put it on the fire."

"Put it in the car for Iris," I said.

"Callie's things go to the ones who loved her.

"I'm wearing mine."

He nodded slowly.

Then he zipped the bag, hung it on the closet door, and took my hand.

"Upstairs," he said.

"Shower."

I looked at the clock.

"Posy's bus came twenty minutes ago.

"Iris has her all day."

"I know.

"I checked."

I laughed.

I let him walk me up the stairs and into the bathroom.

He shut the door and ran the water until the mirror went white.

We got in together.

The tiles were pale gray and cold on my back when he first turned me against them.

Then the water came down hot on both of us.

He kissed me under the spray with his hands in my wet hair.
