Chapter 23: First Snow
It began to snow at half past five in the morning, and I was the only one awake to see it.
Iris had taken Posy up to her cabin on Sebago Lake the day before, with a sled and a bag of marshmallows.
They weren't due back until noon.
The house was ours.
I stood at the bedroom window in his flannel shirt with my forehead against the cold glass.
Big soft flakes came down past the streetlight, slow, and the harbor below had gone white at its edges.
It was the first snow of the year.
I turned from the window and looked at the bed.
Jude lay on his stomach with one arm flung out, his hair in his eyes and the sheet down around his hips.
I climbed onto the mattress and ran my hand down his back.
"Jude."
"Mm."
"Wake up.
"It's snowing."
He opened one eye.
"It snows every year."
"Not like this.
"Come here."
I took his hand and pulled.
He came after me out of the warm sheets, bare and half asleep and grumbling.
I led him across the room to the window and stood him in front of the glass.
The light from the snow lay gray and soft across his chest.
"Look," I said.
He looked.
A slow smile spread across his face, and he put his arm around me.
"I'll be damned," he said.
"It's pretty."
"It's pretty.
"Stay there."
I slid down his body and went to my knees on the rug in front of him.
His smile fell away.
"Bridie."
"Don't move.
"Look at the snow."
"I can't look at the snow," he said.
