Chapter 6: The Help

"I brought Posy's birthday things," Lena said, and lifted two shopping bags as proof.

"I'm doing a supper tonight.

"Just family.

"Iris is coming."

I stood in the hall with my hair full of the wharf and my mouth still sore from his.

I said, "Jude didn't mention a supper."

"Jude doesn't mention anything.

"Somebody has to look after them."

She said it so gently that I almost missed it.

I looked at the key in her hand.

"Callie asked you to?" I said.

"She didn't have to."

Her eyes filled right on schedule.

"I'll be in the kitchen, if you need me."

She left me in the hall.

By six the dining table had a white cloth on it that I had never seen, and a vase of eucalyptus, and a framed photograph of Callie that Lena had moved from the sideboard to the head of the table.

Callie laughed out of it on a boat deck with her hair blowing across her face.

She looked like somebody I would have liked.

I put Posy's plate down in front of her little chair and tried not to look at the picture.

Jude came in at quarter past with salt dried white on his sleeves and went straight to the sink to wash his hands.

Over his shoulder he saw the cloth and the vase and the framed face, and I watched him stop.
