Chapter 7: Spin Cycle
Jude's POV
I should have said it at the table.
I knew it before the gravy boat hit the cloth.
Lena said help, and Bridie's face closed, and I looked at a white tablecloth I had never seen in my life and let it close.
I'd spent twenty months letting Lena run things because it was easier than saying no to a woman who cried.
I put my hand on Bridie's knee under the cloth because I couldn't make my mouth work.
She didn't look at me again all night.
At ten the neighbors left, Lena left, and Iris kissed Posy and stood in the hall with her coat on.
"You know what you did," she said.
"I know."
"Fix it before you sleep, or don't touch her."
She went out.
Posy went to bed at half past, and I read her the one about the bear who can't find his hat three times, and she fell asleep on the third.
I stood in the hall with my back against her closed door.
Light showed under the mudroom door at the bottom of the stairs.
I found Bridie in there in a flannel shirt and bare feet, folding Posy's small clothes into a basket, with the washer going behind her.
The little room is stacked with oilskins and boots and the smell of wet rope.
She didn't turn around.
"Bridie."
"Not yet," she said.
"I should have said something."
"Yes," she said.
"I'm sorry."
"I know.
"I'm angry, and I'll tell you why tomorrow, because I'm too tired tonight to say it fairly."
She finally faced me.
Her eyes were dry and furious, and so tired that I wanted to carry her upstairs and put a blanket over her.
"But I don't want to be angry for the next hour," she said.
