Chapter 9: Fort Allen

The heater ticked and the windows fogged.

I was in Jude's lap with my back against the steering wheel and my sweater already on the floor.

Fort Allen Park lay empty and black behind the glass.

Below the bluff the bay moved slowly, with the lights of the ferry dock strung along the edge of it.

Iris was home with Posy.

She had taken one look at both of us on Monday evening and said, "Go for a drive.

"I'll be here till midnight."

We hadn't gone far.

Jude had pulled into the lot, killed the lights, and looked at me across the cab.

I'd climbed over the gearshift without being asked.

He held my waist now with both hands.

His mouth was on my neck, slow and open.

"You said tomorrow," he murmured.

"It's been two days."

"I know what I said," I said.

"Are you still angry?"

"Yes."

His hands stopped.

"Not tonight," I said.

"Tonight I want to be here, and I don't want to talk.

"Can you do that?"

"I can do anything you ask," he said.

"Then shut up and kiss me."

He did.

It was a long kiss, unhurried, his tongue sliding against mine and his hands pushing up the back of my T-shirt.

His palms were so warm on my bare spine that I arched into them.

He kissed me until my lips were swollen and my head swam.

Then he lifted his mouth an inch and looked at me.

"I want to take my time," he said.

"The other times, I couldn't.

"I was too hungry.

"Let me do it right."
