Chapter 7: The Ring Box

Theron crossed the lawn in six long steps.

Cade had already turned and walked back toward the house.

"What the hell was that?" Theron said.

His voice was low, because my mother's window was open.

"Your brother kissed me," I said. "I pushed him off."

"You kissed him back."

I had not expected him to say it so fast.

He was jealous, and I felt a small, mean flicker of satisfaction.

"I didn't see it as a crime," I said, "since you were busy at the office all week."

That landed.

He opened his mouth and shut it again, and the smooth look I knew went across his face.

"Babe," he said, softer. "I'm sorry. I'm just protective. He's been a snake to me my whole life, and I hate him near you."

"Then keep him away from me."

"I will."

He held my arms and breathed out.

Behind him through the window, I could see Shelley watching us over the rim of a clean wine glass.

Theron drove me home in silence.

He came upstairs without asking, which he almost never did, and stood in my kitchen with his hands in his pockets while I filled the kettle.

"I can't wait until the eighteenth," he said.

I turned off the tap.

"What?"

"I don't want him anywhere near you without a ring on your hand." He pulled a small blue box out of his jacket. "I was going to do it in front of everyone. But I can't do that now."
