Chapter 8: Tuesday

Cade's text came at noon on Tuesday.

"The Marlowe Hotel, downtown. The lobby bar, seven o'clock. Bring your friend."

I forwarded it to Brynn without a word, and she answered with six exclamation points and a gun emoji.

We met outside at six forty-five.

She wore a black wig and enormous sunglasses borrowed from her cousin.

She looked like a spy in a bad movie.

"Subtle," I said.

"I'm a content creator. I know about disguises."

"You're being filmed by every camera on this block."

She lowered her sunglasses an inch. "Then you should stand farther away. You look like his girlfriend."

"I am his girlfriend."

"That's what I said."

We went in together and almost laughed, and the laugh died as soon as I saw who was waiting for us.

Cade sat at a corner table in the lobby bar, with a clear view of the elevators and the front doors.

He rose when he saw us.

"Ms. Tiller."

Brynn pushed her sunglasses up into her wig. "So you're the evil brother."

"I've been called worse in this city." He pulled out a chair for her. "Mostly by your boyfriend."

"He's not my boyfriend anymore, I think. I'm still deciding if I'm going to slap him first or after."
