Chapter 6: The Stamp

"Out of the building," I repeated.

"Her words, Claire. Not mine."

"I've worked for you for six years."

"I know." He breathed out. "Come in at nine tomorrow. She wants to be there. We'll figure something out."

He hung up before I could ask what there was to figure.

My mother had heard every word through the phone.

She picked up my empty plate and stood there holding it.

"What are you going to do?"

"Wear my good blazer," I said.

At nine on Monday morning I walked into the office with my suitcase-wrinkled blazer and my laptop bag.

Fourteen people worked on that floor.

Every one of them stopped typing.

Somebody quickly closed a browser tab.

I didn't have to guess what was on it.

The conference room was glass on three sides.

Beverly sat at the head of the table in a cream suit, a different one, with her reading glasses on a gold chain.

My boss sat beside her, not at the head of his own table.

The door was open.

I understood that was on purpose.

"Claire," Beverly said, without getting up. "Thank you for coming in. This won't take long."

"Good morning, Beverly. How's your hand?"

Out on the floor, somebody coughed to cover a laugh.

Beverly's smile stayed exactly where it was.

"Ridgeway Homes has been with this firm for eleven years," she said, loud enough for the floor. "We've been loyal. But I can't have a violent, unstable woman connected to my projects. My buyers have seen that video."

My boss studied the table.

"So she goes," Beverly said to him. "Today. Or we go. That's the choice."

"She's right that it's a choice," I said.

I put my laptop on the table and opened it.

"Marsh Point," I said. "Forty townhomes on Johns Island. You break ground on the second phase next month."
