Chapter 5: Clause Nine
"You wrote about his script," Pei Dan said. "From inside his house."
She was behind the counter of the coffee shop on Gulou East Street, steaming milk with the face of a woman defusing a bomb.
Yao leaned across the counter and lowered his voice.
"The bridge needed a bench."
"Two million people agree, and one of them is his manager." Pei Dan slammed the pitcher down. "She's going to open your phone on Thursday."
"I know."
"Where is it?"
Yao pulled the burner out of a wool sock printed with ducks.
Pei Dan held out her hand without looking.
"I'll keep it in the grinder drawer," she said. "Nobody opens the grinder drawer. Now eat something."
She put a warm egg tart in his hand and watched him eat it.
"Quit the page," she said, quietly.
"Rent."
"Quit the job, then."
"Rent," Yao said again, with his mouth full.
"You like it there." She squinted at him. "You said his face looks better when he's not doing it on purpose."
"That's an observation."
"It's a love poem."
"It's a roast!" Yao hissed, going red to the ears, and Pei Dan laughed so hard she steamed the wrong cup.
She made him read Clause Nine aloud from the photo of his contract on his phone, to remind him where he stood.
"No personal relationship, romantic or sexual, between assistant and client," Yao read. "Violation voids the contract and triggers a penalty of fifty thousand yuan."
"Fifty thousand," said Pei Dan. "Which you don't have."
"Which I won't need. Because I hate him."
