Chapter 11: Day Six

I did not sleep on the night before the visit.

I lay on the narrow bed in the back room with Zuri's breathing on the monitor and the heater ticking, and every time I closed my eyes I saw a curb.

At two in the morning I got up, put on my coat over my sleep shirt, picked up the baby in her blanket, and went out through the empty bar hall.

I told myself I wanted air.

I walked out the side door and down the steps into the yard.

The snow had stopped.

The sky was a hard clear black, with stars right down to the elevator roof, and the lake lay behind the buildings with a faint new gleam on it.

I walked to the gate.

The sign hung where it had always hung, white letters on a rusted green board.

NO VISITORS AFTER DARK.

I stood under it with my daughter against my shoulder and looked at the lock on the chain.

It was a different lock.

On the first night it had been a black Master with a scratch on the shackle.

This one was brass.

I had seen three different locks on this gate in six days.

I touched the chain.

"Somebody changes it every night," a voice said behind me.

I turned.

Dutch sat on the bottom step of the clubhouse, a dark shape in his coat, with a mug in his hands.
